Helsinki Tram Network, Finland.

The Helsinki tram network forms part of the Helsinki public transport system. The trams are the main means of transport in the city centre. The Helsinki system is one of the oldest electrified tram networks in the world.

The post card shows a MLNRV I (Nr II) class of articulated six-axle tram operated by Helsinki City Transport (HKL) on the Helsinki tram network. All trams of this type were built between the years 1983 and 1987.  Between 1996 and 2005 all trams in the class were modernised by HKL and re designated as Nr II class. From 2006 onwards all trams of this class will be rebuilt with a low-floor midsection. Currently, when all the units have been rebuilt with a low-floor midsection, the whole class has been re designated as MLNRV II.

On the  route Market Square – Kruununhaka – Central Railway Station – Market Square, one can still see the  the 1930-built tram number 157 and the 1919-built open trailer 233.

Helsinki Central railway station is a widely recognised landmark in central Helsinki and the focal point of  public transport in the Greater Helsinki area. The station is used by approximately 200,000 passengers per day, making it Finland's most-visited building. It serves as the point of origin for all trains in the local VR Commuter rail network, as well as for a large proportion of long-distance trains in Finland.  The railway station was opened in 1919 and has seen may renovations and additions since then.

Tr1 Type Locomotive No 1088 Risto, Finland.

Locomotive Risto number 1088 is a Tr1 type locomotive was built in 1956 along with 67 other locomotives between 1940 – 1957. Though many Tr1 locomotives have survived, none is currently running.  Tr1 locomotives were removed from traffic in 1970’s.  

locomotive 1088 Tr1 "Risto" conducted the first test drive 14^th February 1956. It pulled freight trains for twenty years until withdrawn from service. The locomotive is now preserved at  Toijala in Finland.  

Tramway Network in Turku, Finland.

 

The Turku tramway network was the first—and as of 2008, second to last—tram system to be operated in Finland. It was operated as horse tramway from 1890 until 1892, and as an electrified tramway from 1908 until 1972. Picture here is a VALMET RM 2 type  tram which operated between 1956 – 1972. These trams were  nick named as "ghost cars".
